A "FRUGAL" VISION BY YVONNE OSBORNE

BOOKS. The book reviewed by Yvonne Osborne is "The heart is a lonely hunter" by Carson McCullers. But the revelation for me has been herself and her vision.
The book shows what mundane work does to creativity. A young musician has to drop out of school and work at Woolworth's to help support her family for ten dollars a week. She thinks about a piano but does not mention that aloud. She does not want to work in the store but when they all start to think about what the ten dollars can buy, she is trapped into it. Her description of losing her energy and ambition to write music is a heartbreaking account of how hard is to spend your life creating art without being independently wealthy.
- "Now no music was in her mind. Sometimes a quick little tune would come and go. It was like the store took all her energy and time. Woolworth's wasn't the same as school. When she used to come home from school she felt good and was ready to start working on the music. But now she was always tired. A song she had started in her private notebook two months before was still not finished".
Yvonne believes that it is possible to stay outside the "rat-race":
- "Whistle, sing, write, or draw with passion, whatever it is that lifts your spirits and makes you feel alive, but live simply, like a frugal bourgeois."

CIVILIZED PARKS

PLACES. Seville, a stroll in a park until closing time at midnight. That sounds pretty civilized to me.

Suena bastante civilizado.

UP IN THE AIR (2009) with George Clooney

FILMS. Once upon a time I could have sing to this music too:
-"Tonight most people will be welcomed home by jumping dogs and squealing kids. Their spouses will ask about their day. Tonight they'll sleep. The stars will wheel forth from their daytime hiding places, and one of those lights, slightly brighter than the rest, will be my wingtip passing over".

HOT, FLAT and CROWDED by Thomas L. Friedman

BOOKS. I've been in business many years, mainly in industrial or consumer good jobs. For once that I tried to become a financier it was a mess.
Hot, Flat, and Crowded explain in a comprehensive and easy way the current economical crisis and the role of energy in it. The best I have read.
The book shows too how financial speculation has become the major player in the World of Economics.
I guess that despite being an Economist myself - of the old school I'm afraid - I have no future whatsoever in a business with such a trend.

JEFF'S DIALOGUES

ART. A dialogue with Jeff in Seville.
- Jeff (serious): Imagine how weird. Even if you are one out of a million, there will still be 10 like you in NY.
- Pet (smiles): Then, one out of a million is not good enough.
- Jeff (laughs, and then serious again): Wait, wait. I have to write that one down!
In the picture, Jeff writing down the "not good enough" quote.

GINGER

TIPS. By the Cathedral wall in Granada, this woman sold home made candies as a remedy for several illnesses. I bought the ginger ones, which she "prescribed" against sickness.
No more worries about the narrow mountain roads of Granada!
More ginger recipes: A big mug of hot soy-milk with a pinch of ginger for a soothing deep sleep night.

FOOD. I used to have dinner many times there when in Seville. Sometimes 2 or 3 days in a row. Paco showed me the place once and then I brought everybody there. I still do.
Wonderful evenings with a Tosta de jamón, an Ensaladilla, some fish too. The tables where always beautifully lined in the street, with their white clothes on, the chatter of the people, the cool beer.
The sanctuary rests under the afternoon sun waiting for the evening. I had never seen "her" naked before.

COFFEE IN SEVILLE

TIPS. When I arrived last Monday in Seville, Paco was waiting for me with a welcome present. He remembered that the last time I visited him last year I liked his coffee very much, and had brought it for me from Madrid. The packet of Cafes La Mexicana smelt fragrantly. I vaguely remembered about it until I smelled it again.
For a week I have enjoyed his coffee in Seville. I can still smell it in my imagination while I watch its picture now.

EREAGA in Memoriam

My mother died yesterday. I wrote this some days ago.   Mi madre murió ayer. Escribí esto hace unos días.

MEMORIES. When we were kids, we used to go to Ereaga beach with my mother. We lived in Algorta, over the cliff, and went down a path from Los Chopos little Park. There used to be a spring halfway down the cliff, where we always stopped to drink on the way up. We went to the beach whenever we got a sunny day in summer, in the morning, and came back home under the heavy sun for a late lunch. We fished crabs in the rocks too.
Now I wheelchair my mother every week, many times to Los Chopos, and to Maria Cristina Park, a little bit further, too. We watch the beach from there. I talk to her about the times that we went down to the beach and she listens in silence and draws a smile.

JEFF'S BEACH

PHOTOGRAPHY. This picture (posted last month under the BEACH AND POOL title) was inspired in the beach pictures that Jeffrey Silverthorne took when he came to visit us last summer. You can judge yourself watching the Post: SUMMER PICTURES from Jeffrey Silverthorne, from last September.
Jeff's advice has been a constant inspiration. Art is a compromise. To understand this is even helping me to understand myself better.

HIGH NOON at La Concha

SAN SEBASTIAN. We do bring wooden racquets (palas) and place ourselves facing each other, barefoot on the sand under the sun. The ball must be in the air, hit from one contender to the other as hard as possible, and hit back. Again and again. Trying to keep it going from one side to the other, for as many times as both contenders are capable.
Then a swim in the sea, to cool down, a long deep in the blue, a shared lunch of pasta salad, and 10 minutes of laying down, drying under the warming sun with a piece of melting chocolate in the mouth before leaving the ground. The Season is on.
