50 à TEUILLAC

PENCILANDBOXBOOKS. Our French friends H and B invited family and friends for a long B's birthday weekend in June at their house in Teuillac. We had lunch, dinner, and then breakfasted too. Most of the guests were of course French but in honor of the host (German born herself), there were a few German too, including her mother. M spoke mainly in English, as she usually does in these occasions, but this time she spoke quite more in French than usual. When in France I like speaking but in French but having there B's mother I enjoyed myself adventuring with her in my little German too. Spanish was not of great use, I'm afraid, during the whole weekend.
I had promised B to make one of my books. I believe I have managed to capture the ambience of a vrai French gathering à la campagne. Click here to view.

BLUE CARGO REVISITED (3)

PLACES. La plage d'Ilbarritz is for us one of those places that continues to be a favorite throughout different times. But this July has been a real revival of the place. We went one day with J and N - who nowadays mostly prefer to go out with friends - to "take" waves, which we all still like doing, and for lunch. Lunch at the Blue Cargo of course. And we ended going back for another 10 days. M and I could hardly believe it. J and N wanted to go again and again - we only too ready to please them. Crème brûlée  an argument - they serve a good one. But so or more were the waves, white, warm, big some of them - brave boys - the walk in low tide to Biarritz même, and the chocolate paninis, hot and crispy. A more than decent Chablis to be taken into account too as far as I am concern. It was like a long family gathering, our very special hideway, secluded from the day to day same things and features of San Sebastian, like in an island. Ferried in and out by our Volvo vessel, just half an hour of highway sail.
Now Juan is leaving for Kansas and we are leaving for Germany. May be next year will be more big white waves for us.

M y yo casi no podíamos creerlo. J y N querían volver y volver a ir - nosotros solo totalmente dispuestos a complacerles.

MARTINIQUE. I've been in Martinique several times. But the time I went with M, A and B to the Jardin de Balata will remain in my memory for ever. We had arrived at Sainte-Anne sailing from the island of St Vincent, just in front, and anchored in its bay for a couple of days. One of them we rented a car. We wanted to go as deep into the mountains and the forest as possible, as a sort of irresistible need. As we went, the road became narrower every curve, and the vegetation denser, and the air as humid as if it were full of rain. We were soon tired and I even nearly fainted. We found a hut-bar in the jungle serving a rum drink to reestablish the blood pressure in our bodies, but still it took us a good while of the same serpentine like unending road until we saw the sea again.
We had crossed to the other side of the island - Martinique isn't that big - and there on the slopes above the brilliant blue ocean was the garden of Balata, full of every color. It was such a relief, such a happy dream coming alive after a "hard day".
This happened at a time of ups in our life, when everything seemed to be going from good to better. Soon we were to find otherwise - nothing remains as it is forever.
But we didn't know then, and everything seemed possible, and worth trying, every desire well deserved, every dream so real.
The poster A bought that day is pinned to a wall at his place, 12 years after.

He estado en Martinica varias veces.

TIPS. At the early morning marché all needed to feed a large hungry family can be found. This year we were only 20 at our annual family gathering , already a tradition, for a 3 days long weekend at the French Atlantic town of Vieux Boucau, south of Bordeaux.
Then, for coffee, or later, for a good glass of white wine, our favorite is the terrace at the Hotel du Centre.

FRENCH BREAD

FOOD. 6 months ago I bought a bread making oven at a bargain price - as you might recall from my LIDL Post at the time. Now I have found the Carrefour Farine à pain avec levure aux graines de tournesol (1Kg) at the Carrefour store at San Jean de Luz, just across the French border from San Sebastian. A few personal trial-and-error baking tricks, et voilá my French bread! For 99 cents you'll make 2 loafs like this one.

LES NEIGES DU KILIMANDJARO (2011) by Robert Guédiguian

FILMS. Les neiges du Kilimandjaro (The Snows of Kilimanjaro) isn't directly linked to Ernest Hemingway but to a French pop song of the same name. On a very French day - we had lunch with one of Herve's wines and went to the movies to watch a movie in French - Susana, a friend, spent the day with us waiting for the night train from San Sebastian to Lisbon.
Like nearly all French Midi films it's full of la joie de vivre, and this one, on top of that, has got a soul as clean as, well, snow. I will not say more about the Marseillaise family featured in the film. Watch it and I believe you'll have the snow feeling too.
We had a wonderful day with Su. It rained all day but the sun came from Marseille.

MR BEAN IN PARIS

PLACES. This year we will be going to Paris. The decision were to go was made by J and N based on a Mr Bean's movie that they had watched. Well, the decision had to be made someway or another and this way was as good as any. What do you think?
I am a Puccini fan myself. I could watch and listen Puccini all the time, in any form, so I was easily convinced. And I was so proud that they liked Puccini too :-)

Click to watch.

ART.  The photographic study of Barbara Schroeder at the time of her exhibition at the Citadelle de Blaye is divided in 4 parts: 1. Le déjeuner. 2. La route. 3. La Messe à Blaye. 4. Le prière.
As I said (PencilandBoxBooks) it was my first book made on order!
PS. Hervé put a case of his wine, Chateau Grand Maison, in the car boot, but he does it every time, photos o no photos :-)

PencilandBoxBooks

PHOTOGRAPHY. B asked me to make one of my photo-books, for her exhibition in Blaye. We went there, talked, ate, drank, and made a lot of pictures.
The result is BARBARA À BLAYE, my first book on order!
I only "charged" her with the food and keep while at her place, and sent her in exchange the book, free-delivered too. So a business had started :-)
Anyone with an idea - his house, her paintings, his town, her boat, his pier, you name it - is welcomed.  I will go, walk around, take the pictures, and the resulting book will then be delivered free, like Barbara's.
No matter where you are, if you want the book, you just have to pick me at the closest airport/station and feed me while around taking the pictures. Isn't this a great business proposal?
.
NOTE: This offer is only available for Pencil&Box followers, so you better rush and become one if you haven't already :-)

BARBARA À BLAYE is on-line on Blurb Bookstore, free for anyone to watch.

PLACES. Since I'm approaching my first anniversary as a blogger I'm afraid that my blog will start looking more and more like a pilgrimage thing, a rite of sorts.
I like revisiting the same places, mostly in the same seasons, to revive my little pleasures, and the blog might suffer now and then (read LE BLUE CARGO) from this habit too.
This time we have been with the children and one of J's friends.

BOKADO

FOOD. There is not such a thing as sense, or justice, or even consequence. There is but chance, and our ability to adapt ourselves, more or less, to anything.
H and B - they came from Bordeaux to see us - felt sorry for me. For the dead of my mother. For the loss of my job.
- She didn't suffer more. You get to see more of your children.
But we shouldn't feel sorry for chance, so non-guilty she. It is how well we adapt that we should celebrate, not chance.
We did drink two bottles of Fillaboa, a wonderful Albariño, from Galicia, with a grilled red tuna, red-red inside, in a soft, creamed, herbed mustard sauce, white-green, like mint milk in its colour, and we enjoyed our "good chance" in choosing fish and wine. It wouldn't have made any sense to celebrate how well we adapted to Bokado. Not even to the bill. Euros might be worthless after Greece. But that is chance again!

ART. I didn't find it in Sussex (See PARADISE LOST Post). This time it was at the Salon de Design des années 50 aux années 70 in Biarritz. I would have liked to buy this Yves Clerc's variation on Botticelli, if only to celebrate Easter :) but it was 40.000 euros.
The day had started with local cider from the barrell at Arbonne, a little town in the French Basque countryside, and then lunch under the canopy of trees of L'Auberge d'Achtal in Arcangues, another small village, with friends Willi and Arantza and a good bottle of Pessac (claret), cèpes and magret. And to forget about the "Botticelli" in good spirit, we ended the day with Kir Royale's by the sea, at the garden bar of La Reserve in St Jean de Luz.

MAJESTIC CROQUE-MONSIEUR

FOOD. Before we'd got our children we used to have a croque-monsieur and a green salad for lunch many Saturdays at the Majestic. It is still worth having them. For dinner, by the corner, the place is Kaiku. A feast.

PLACES. While I was living in London I travelled to Genève many times, by plane, and from there by train always to Lutry, near Lausanne. Blas, a Professor at the University of Lausanne, was my thesis director then. We used to walk and talk. His subject always epistemology. His house in Lutry, sorrounded by the vineyards on the slopes, the snowed Alps, the table at the Hotel Le Rivage, les filets de perche aux amandes …
The postcard was printed in 1939, the picture surely was taken even before that. I can remember the same place in the years around 1990. I’m told that everything remains as it ever was.

PLACES. A restaurant and a bar with good music in an imposing old house over the Ilbarritz beach, near Biarritz in France. I’ve been a regular customer there for 20 years and it is still a great place to go in summer.  Interestingly, an old friend, Alfonso,  recently befriended someone who actually lived in the house in his childhood. As a plus, they stock Hervé’s wine - Chateau Grand Maison - since last year. Funny little world.
