DREAM TRAVEL: Volkach

DAY 7. Haßfurt - Volkach  54 km. We follow all the day the Main further. On Saturday August 13 we'll arrive in Volkach, where just on this day is there a big Wine Fest!
Volkach is a beautiful small town by the Main, surrounded by vineyards. We didn't know that on the day of our planned arrival would be there a Wine Festival. That was why we couldn't find a room, every place was fully booked. But finally we've been very lucky. It seemed impossible! The Turndieb Hotel seems also very beautiful, and in a quiet corner too. I hope that this is not just a dream.
And in this dream town I've found also a really nice Biergarten, the Hinterhöffe, with a romantic terrace. But if on a day like this we want to dine there, it would be better to book a table soon!
Or why not, we could just go and get ourselves lost in the Fest.
DIA 7.
Espero no haberlo soñado solo.

BLUE CARGO REVISITED (3)

PLACES. La plage d'Ilbarritz is for us one of those places that continues to be a favorite throughout different times. But this July has been a real revival of the place. We went one day with J and N - who nowadays mostly prefer to go out with friends - to "take" waves, which we all still like doing, and for lunch. Lunch at the Blue Cargo of course. And we ended going back for another 10 days. M and I could hardly believe it. J and N wanted to go again and again - we only too ready to please them. Crème brûlée  an argument - they serve a good one. But so or more were the waves, white, warm, big some of them - brave boys - the walk in low tide to Biarritz même, and the chocolate paninis, hot and crispy. A more than decent Chablis to be taken into account too as far as I am concern. It was like a long family gathering, our very special hideway, secluded from the day to day same things and features of San Sebastian, like in an island. Ferried in and out by our Volvo vessel, just half an hour of highway sail.
Now Juan is leaving for Kansas and we are leaving for Germany. May be next year will be more big white waves for us.

M y yo casi no podíamos creerlo. J y N querían volver y volver a ir - nosotros solo totalmente dispuestos a complacerles.

HORCHATA LUNCH BY THE GUGGENHEIM

TIPS. This was another failed lunch. I had a couple of meetings in Bilbao and then I had planned for a lunch. But plans 1, 2, and 3 failed and I ended substituting lunch for a (large) glass of horchata at Bilbao's Doña Casilda Park. Horchata is a sort of nut milk made with the brown tubers ("chufas") from the root of a nut sedge plant typical of Eastern Spain. But if you happen to be around Bilbao, visiting the Guggenheim or otherwise, this Northern horchata is worth the incursion in the Park, a short walk from the Museum. Chilled but liquid, as it should be. Silky and creamy.
The mild autumn weather helped - I took off jacket and tie to better enjoy the treat of drinking it slowly.

"Txirin" AZKORRI

PLACES. The end of the season is may be the best of it always. Places start to get empty but still in full blossom.  I went with friend A to the Azkorri "Txirin", some 20 Kms from Bilbao along the coast. And old made of wood beach bar that I remembered from ages ago, somehow modernized with a bright coat of white paint and bits of intense pink-violet color here and there.
The grilled sardines were magnificent and so were the local tomatoes. And the few people around, a couple and a young woman on her own, relaxed, looking at the see below, were of a kind that create an easy and enjoyable atmosphere too.

MADRID. The weather in Madrid this time of the year is pure joy. Lightfull, with a caressing sun. I had to spend a day there for a meeting and a lunch. One of those day trips to the capital. The meeting went fine but the lunch was cancelled a the last minute. I took to walk on the nice day down to Santa Engracia and there I sat on the terrace of a new place (for me), Osteria La Norma. It happened to be run by an elderly Sicilian couple, who spoke a very rudimentary Spanish, so during most of our conversation they spoke straight in Italian. They laid a big table for me under the shadow of the tree in the corner of the street. La Osteria La Norma just happens to be in the corner between the streets of Santa Engracia and Españoleto. A big and well ironed white cloth was placed on the table. The Sicilian pasta and the dessert of the menu too were rich and tasteful, full of flavors, like the Sicilian food is. I believe that the name of the lady was really Norma, the place named on her honor. It remind me of the time that we went to Sicily, and to the Sicilian restaurants in Rome too. A treat. And very affordable too.

PENCILANDBOXBOOKS

PENCILANDBOXBOOKS. A bit late yes, but as promised here is the latest PencilandBoxBook - this one about our trip to Sicily in May and our stay there in Ortigia.
We went there behind the scent of what we had read about Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus (236-183 BC) the Roman who finally beat Hannibal. Scipio took base in the island of Ortigia for the 2 years that he stayed in Sicily to prepare the V and VI Roman legions before crossing to Africa for the final battle.
We found what was left (click here to watch)  and came back home with tomatoes (see Sicilian Tomatoes).

SICILIAN TOMATOES

FOOD. We went for a week to Sicily last month with our two boys.We had rented a place in Ortigia, the old quarter of Siracura. The weather was summery. I swam from the rocks at the end of our narrow street every day. The water was still cold but refreshing. The bread at the corner bread shop was wholesome. One could live on that only. I took hundreds of pictures of the decadent palazzos, falling down from their former splendor but lively with their new tenants. I even found a carpenter shop in one of them.
At the local Lidl store we found excellent olive oil and really tasty tomatoes too. So fond did we become of them that we took 2 bags back home, as a sort of souvenir.  They lasted for another week. So it was like two weeks in Sicily!

Stay tuned and you'll find the next PencilandBoxBook (about Sicily) published soon.

PS. J(12) wanted to see ALL Greek Temples (the island is hilly) and N(10) to climb the Etna. So the week was a bit bumpier than just enjoying juicy tomatoes.

UNDERGROUND

MADRID. I took the plane to Madrid, like always, and then the Underground to Alonso Martinez street. Above ground, at the Riofrio Cafe, there was still hot coffee and croissants, the resemblance that everything continued to be the same. Underground though, one could feel - without dressing ups - the sadness, the defenselessness, the tiredness of the country, the wound, as the morning started in the city.

PwC by the GUGGENHEIM

POETRY

I met my former colleagues at PwC
at Bilbao for a "working" breakfast.
My old office there by the Guggenheim
with the weirdness of a thunder bell
seemed capable of falling over in a mess
of steel and titanium, made scrap metal.

ROMA (2004) by Adolfo Aristarain

FILMS. There are countries than one can love like if they were a woman. This was Argentine for me. I watched the movie - Roma - and my dreamt Buenos Aires was there. The pain too. There are movies that one likes because they are like oneself. I met José Sacristán - the actor that plays the old writer in the movie - once. He acts like he is, not really an acting asset, but I liked that too. Absolute consciousness about the fact that we cannot relive life, not even revisit the memories of a haunting past, can be a desperate thing.

GAME OF THRONES

BOOKS. I saw them in a bookshop window in Vienna. I was hooked  - impossible to stop reading - to the Game of Thrones saga last winter. It was already quite a job to read through its thousands of pages. I can't even imagine what must it be to translate all of it into German!
PS. I had introduced my brother-in-law Scott to Colleen McCullough's The First Man in Rome saga, good books about the Roman Republic - a favorite subject for me - and he spent like 2 months doing nothing but read them. So as a sort of a vengeance he put on my hands the first of these.

DONAUTIPS

BIKING. If someone of the readers of this periodical is going to bike down the Donau, here are some tips from our journey:

1.Feldkirchen. Worth stopping around if only for the  Marillenknödel at Wögerer's Wirsthaus. The best ones of our trip. A delicious dessert of two big Marillenknödels for 3.90€. It made our dinner! The bike road from the town to the swimming lake was really nice too.
2.Gasthof Böhm at Persenbeug.  Enjoy the "nature"  unfiltered beer under the tree. Better even than advertised. Tasty dish of roasted mushrooms, potatoes and carrots. Nice rooms too with a terrace and flowers.
3.Wachau wines. We stayed at the Lehensteiner's at Weissenkirchen. Front rooms looked really nice although we got the back ones. They made their own wine, as most of the "houses" in town. In the picture W and A posing for this review.
4.Middle of nowhere. Just to recommend something in the middle of nowhere, we had a wonderful dinner - and beer - at a very small town out of the main route, at Tiefenbök's Restaurant in Tiefenfucha. We walked there from Oberfucha - also in the middle of nowhere - under the stars. Couldn't get a better beer in Vienna.
5.Favorite in Vienna, as mentioned in the previous Post, was the Judenplatz. Also nice the Plachuttas Restaurant, by the Opera, for a noisier night. We did like the bars and terraces along the Shubertring but didn't sit in any.
Note: Having biked for a few hours before probably had a positive influence in the above mentioned perceptions :-)
.
Wögerer. Feldkirchen
 Gasthof Böhm. Persenbeug
Lehensteiner. Weissenkirchen
 Tiefenbök. Tiefenfucha
 Plachuttas. Vienna

JUDENPLATZ

PLACES. If we had to recommend a favorite one of all the nice little corners of Vienna - and I believe I am speaking for the four of us in the biking team - it would be the Judenplatz. Perfect for lunch or dinner or for having a beer. In the heart of the city but peaceful  enough even in the middle of the tourist season. Beautiful, and full of meaning too.

340 KM FOR A SACHER TORTE

BIKING. We arrived at the door of the Opera House in Vienna on our bikes - so much for the love of music -  all the way from Passau in Germany. The prize I had envisaged for such a feat was a slice of Sacher Torte. The Sacher Hotel being in front of the Opera's back door, just a coincidence!
The last time I had one was 20 years ago. I remembered it as the utmost chocolate pleasure but I was somehow disappointed this time. I can remember those times vividly - we all must have changed a lot - but I can still recreate that taste on my mind.

SCHWALLENBURG

BIKING. It took us across the Danube from Grein to short cut on the rest of the team - crossing by a bridge further up the river. We became dear friends of both the boat and the boatman during the short river crossing. Have many happy crossings Schwallenburg!

IN VINO VERITAS

BIKING. But biking further down the Danube, in the Wachau region, we couldn't help having a bottle, and two too, of their Grüner Veltliner wines!

THE CATCHER IN THE CORN

BIKING. I wasn't aware there was so much corn in Austria. For the first 200 Km down the Danube river corn was all over the place. I even dreamt one night with corn taking over, in a sort of alien invasion. I was trying to escape on a bike. That's the sort of dream one gets after pedaling on a bike one day after the other!

BIKE AND BLOG

NOTICE. We will be biking with some friends, down the Danube from Passau to Wien, for the next 10 days or so. If any of the readers of this blog is along the route we'll welcome a glass of lemonade
But even more than that, if anyone - in the world - knows how to make blogger work on an iPad I will even be able to post from the road!
Note: I have already downloaded like 3 different Apps and none seems to let me edit my Posts properly.

Nota: Ya he bajado como 3 Apps y ninguno parece dejarme editar mis posts bien.

THE ASSOCIATE

PLACES. Funny, we do also bill the hours and lunches to clients, and work long hours at the office and make a hard ladder up to the partnership for rookies, like in John Grisham's The Associate.
But then, a late evening beer at R with real Irish music with friend and former colleague C makes for the week.
Note: The lunch on Monday with another friend, I paid it out of my pocket, and so we did the beers :-)
