BLURB SEASON

PENCILANDBOXBOOKS. It was long due. We went on trips and celebrations to Florence in May, to Teuillac in June and to Bavaria in August and I hadn't produced any of the customary books yet. But I have managed to put all that work behind and now the presentation season starts.
I hope you like this first one here - Il Renascimento, Firenze 2015 - about how did we found Florence 500 years after! Click here to view.
PS: I know I have stuck with the Blurb books. I couldn't find any other publisher that I liked better. Anyone there with an alternative suggestion?

5 YEARS ON!

EDITORIAL. Wow, I never thought that it would be like this. That I would be celebrating just that - that I have managed to remain alive here in the void of the Universe. I know that only very few people read me, now and then, but I treasure it like the most precious jewel.
The day I started I didn't know what to expect. I wasn't expecting that anyway. It was more like just a will to fly. But now I know that - little as it may seem my little treasured jewel - it makes a lot of sense to me. And I am happy for that.
I wasn't expecting either that J would surf on a kayak nor that N would play the piano! I would  have expected it more the other way around! But so is life.  So, how about a little "home made" piano for the celebration?

KAYAKING KANSAS

J and N. It all started nearly by chance, like most great things. J wasn't good with sports - apart from being a good swimmer. We used to walk to the pool at the other side of the bay many weekends in winter. Then, as I had some kayaking experience - having kayaked years ago - we tented the boys with kayaking, during some holidays in Mexico and the like. So joining the boys in for some kayaking summer activities in San Sebastian seemed only like the right follow up thing to do - imposing it on the boys for summer without forcing anything too hard. And then J thrilled with the waves, never in fear of them, and joined the club for winter.
The one in the picture was his first "trophy". Third out of probably four, if not less, but in real waters with real waves.
Then when dreaming about where he would like to go to High School (for a year) in the US, his wishes were: - Anywhere with waves! But, like most great things, unsuspected and unexpected, it happened to be Kansas. Well, he is already kayaking in Kansas, happy like fish in water.

BLUE CARGO REVISITED (3)

PLACES. La plage d'Ilbarritz is for us one of those places that continues to be a favorite throughout different times. But this July has been a real revival of the place. We went one day with J and N - who nowadays mostly prefer to go out with friends - to "take" waves, which we all still like doing, and for lunch. Lunch at the Blue Cargo of course. And we ended going back for another 10 days. M and I could hardly believe it. J and N wanted to go again and again - we only too ready to please them. Crème brûlée  an argument - they serve a good one. But so or more were the waves, white, warm, big some of them - brave boys - the walk in low tide to Biarritz même, and the chocolate paninis, hot and crispy. A more than decent Chablis to be taken into account too as far as I am concern. It was like a long family gathering, our very special hideway, secluded from the day to day same things and features of San Sebastian, like in an island. Ferried in and out by our Volvo vessel, just half an hour of highway sail.
Now Juan is leaving for Kansas and we are leaving for Germany. May be next year will be more big white waves for us.

M y yo casi no podíamos creerlo. J y N querían volver y volver a ir - nosotros solo totalmente dispuestos a complacerles.

SAM MONTAIGNE

NORTH POTOMAC, MARYLAND. We had spent the previous week around Virginia and Washington DC - and a visit to Baltimore too for a hockey game - meeting people and partying here and there.
On January 1st, to start the new year, S and wife T took all of us in their house in Maryland for an elaborated long Chinese lunch. We then had oranges and tea - brought all the way from Qingdao where they were born - with a kind of warm and delicious corn bread straight from the oven.
Fireplaces came into the conversation - S and T having recently changed theirs. How inefficient the old style ones are but how so many people do not still replace them for the better "stove" type ones. XVI century French philosopher Montaigne had already noted in his "Essays" this difficulty of humans for changing habits, writing precisely about fireplaces at that time around different countries in Europe, and the stubbornness of the people in favor of the advantages of their local ones, against all evidence.
Throughout the conversation in the afternoon in their beautifully arranged cosy house, one could easily realize their high regard for Education, in the way that only Chinese people know how to do. The story of their life, their studies and their work, the way they educated their children, an example of it. It came clear - to me - that China will prevail while the rest of us lag behind in our knowledge about the things we do - preferring to play instead our little games of diversion, of hiding and pretending, of power and vanity. (Montaigne had already observed that too).
And so went the day. They cared about us and treated as like royalty, out of love for Cristina and how she helped them years ago. Thank you. We couldn't have a better start for the year.

RUSSIAN BALLET IN DIXIELAND

ATHENS, GEORGIA. The State Ballet Theatre of Russia gave a good performance of Tchaikovsky's classic Christmas Nutcracker. In taste.  All the way into the American mainland its colorfulness felt somehow very natural to the exuberance of America itself. The Athenian crowd, pleased with the Russian dancing, and with themselves - mostly Sunday dressed for the occasion -  broke in applause now and then too, even where you shouldn't.
But the boys didn't like it, and neither did their American cousins. I felt the emotion of other Christmas and other Nutcrackers all coming together, in particular the ones at the Royal Festival Hall, while living in London, and enjoyed the little dances on the stage more than ever. Are we getting that old?

CHICKEN CHRISTMAS

ATHENS, GEORGIA. We are in Peach Country, but the boys are hooked - again- to the chicken of Chick-fil-A. (We, the grown ups have already have a couple of two of bottles of Cab with "American Asiago" cheese!)

Arthur Rimbaud

RHAPSODY IN SAN SEBASTIAN

MUSIC. Son N (11) played a Norton's Rhapsody at a piano contest - his first - hold at Andoain (by San Sebastian) with children from all around the Basque Country. I could revive my time as a piano student in Bilbao, the mix atmosphere of children and piano sounds.
N got a silver medal, blaming on a mistake not to get gold, but ready back home to start preparing for next years contest, dreaming for a enrapturing piece.
My mother would have loved to be there.

PENCILANDBOXBOOKS

PENCILANDBOXBOOKS. A bit late yes, but as promised here is the latest PencilandBoxBook - this one about our trip to Sicily in May and our stay there in Ortigia.
We went there behind the scent of what we had read about Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus (236-183 BC) the Roman who finally beat Hannibal. Scipio took base in the island of Ortigia for the 2 years that he stayed in Sicily to prepare the V and VI Roman legions before crossing to Africa for the final battle.
We found what was left (click here to watch)  and came back home with tomatoes (see Sicilian Tomatoes).

BEST OF FORMENTERA 2013

FORMENTERA. This was the 9th year in a row in Formentera. Next year it will be our 10th anniversary!
Best of this Year was the beach by the Lucky bar; the new ice creams at Amore i Odio in La Mola; the Moussaka at Can Toni; and dinner at Canapepa by the Church at San Francesc with Juan Luis Cañas wine, a must this season all around (and Parker's best quality-price wine of the year). All outdoors.
And Classics from Ever, still there, the terrace for breakfast at Es Caló, in between swims in the blue-blue-blue sea around; the unbelievable transparent waters; the siestas - after breakfast, before lunch, after lunch - all three of them; climbing down from La Mola to Sa Cala early in the morning and down the "Roman" road to Es Caló too; the night walks towards the lighthouse under billions of stars, the smooth feeling of peace; the boys growing, their friends growing too; the other breakfasts at Xicu with bread and tomatoes; the tomatoes direct from Pepe's house garden to the plate, hot and juicy, the olive oil; the islands "payés" bread.
And a Classic of all Classics, the Uruguayan "asado" at Can Carlets, hosted as always by B and M. Already missing next year's!

SICILIAN TOMATOES

FOOD. We went for a week to Sicily last month with our two boys.We had rented a place in Ortigia, the old quarter of Siracura. The weather was summery. I swam from the rocks at the end of our narrow street every day. The water was still cold but refreshing. The bread at the corner bread shop was wholesome. One could live on that only. I took hundreds of pictures of the decadent palazzos, falling down from their former splendor but lively with their new tenants. I even found a carpenter shop in one of them.
At the local Lidl store we found excellent olive oil and really tasty tomatoes too. So fond did we become of them that we took 2 bags back home, as a sort of souvenir.  They lasted for another week. So it was like two weeks in Sicily!

Stay tuned and you'll find the next PencilandBoxBook (about Sicily) published soon.

PS. J(12) wanted to see ALL Greek Temples (the island is hilly) and N(10) to climb the Etna. So the week was a bit bumpier than just enjoying juicy tomatoes.

WHALE WATCHERS

SAN SEBASTIAN. She sat on our beach this morning. Like a big sister, surrounded by us, little whale-watching penguins. She came swimming from the West, but nothing could persuade her to leave us and go back to wherever she came from.

THE PIANO

MUSIC. Like if we were in a Jane Austen novel, we spend the raining morning Sundays playing the piano. The TV turned off, ipad and PCs in sleeping mode, N trying a new piece every week. Even on weekdays he arrives from school and heads  for the piano to speed through - his particular racing - the latest one. He's just started but plays already a Bach's Menuett, Haydn's Little Serenade, Beethoven's Für Elise (the first page), the Bach's Prelude on which Shubert's Ave Maria is based, the first compasses of Beethoven's Clair de Lune, and I'm starting to teach him Mozart's Piano Sonate No15. The repertoire could be Jane Austin's as well - my fault - but the atmosphere, surrounded by the misty sea, couldn't be more befitting. My mother would have been so proud. And all that on a piano that is not even a piano! (read this Post).
All to be said, N's motivation derives from a You Tube video of a Chinese boy playing like a sort of Mozart of this era, at a 200mph speed. Not sure if it is a fake performance either!
