OSTERIA LA NORMA

MADRID. The weather in Madrid this time of the year is pure joy. Lightfull, with a caressing sun. I had to spend a day there for a meeting and a lunch. One of those day trips to the capital. The meeting went fine but the lunch was cancelled a the last minute. I took to walk on the nice day down to Santa Engracia and there I sat on the terrace of a new place (for me), Osteria La Norma. It happened to be run by an elderly Sicilian couple, who spoke a very rudimentary Spanish, so during most of our conversation they spoke straight in Italian. They laid a big table for me under the shadow of the tree in the corner of the street. La Osteria La Norma just happens to be in the corner between the streets of Santa Engracia and Españoleto. A big and well ironed white cloth was placed on the table. The Sicilian pasta and the dessert of the menu too were rich and tasteful, full of flavors, like the Sicilian food is. I believe that the name of the lady was really Norma, the place named on her honor. It remind me of the time that we went to Sicily, and to the Sicilian restaurants in Rome too. A treat. And very affordable too.

El tiempo en Madrid en esta época del año es pura alegría. Lleno de luz, con un sol que acaricia. Tuve que pasar el día en Madrid para una reunión y una comida. Uno de esos viajes de día a la capital. La reunión fue bien pero la comida fue cancelada en el último minuto. Comencé a andar en el bonito día, bajando hasta Santa Engracia y allí me senté en la terraza de un sitio nuevo (para mi), la Osteria La Norma. Sucedió que estaba regentada por una pareja mayor de sicilianos, que hablaban en un español rudimentario, con lo que durante la mayor parte de nuestra conversación hablaban directamente en italiano. Prepararon una gran mesa para mi bajo la sombra del arbol de la esquina de la calle. La Osteria La Norma está justo en la esquina de las calles Santa Engracia y Españoleto. Con un gran mantel blanco bien planchado sobre la mesa. La pasta y el postre siciliano del menú también estaban repletos de sabor y de aromas, como es la comida siciliana. Creo que el nombre de la señora era realmente Norma, el lugar nombrado en su honor. Me recordó a los tiempos en que fuimos a Sicilia, y también a los restaurantes sicilianos de Roma. Un placer. Y a muy buen precio.
