NY BLACK AND WHITE DREAM

POETRY

Two naked bodies
one white the other black
hot cat desires
warm the city nights.
Black and white
dreams and limbs
under the roofs
and the underground.
Rivers of moisture
dark and deep
closed windows and eyes
the city comes to sleep.

A 21st CENTURY WAFFLE CHRISTMAS EVE

MEMORIES. On our way to NY, we arrived at Bethlehem - Harrisonburg, Virginia - late at night. We parked the 8 seated Suburban in front of the doors of our rooms at the Best Western there - room for 4 with breakfast for $60. We turned on the wall air-heater and went for a swim to the pool. I went in my swimming pants running across the parking lot. Then everybody, tired of the car ride, put on their pajamas. Juan and Nicolas were hungry so I went out with Nicolas. We crossed a closed gas station to find a dimly lit Waffle House and brought a plain waffle for Juan and a couple of a dollar for 2 hamburgers for Maria and Nicolas. We played and laughed on the piled snow under the stars in the freezing cold. Juan cried because he would have liked a doughnut instead, but I hugged him for a while and he was happy again and we went to sleep, all together in the same room.
That morning aunt Josefina died en Bilbao at the age of 92. I talked to my mother too from the road. She is wheelchaired because of ALS. But still it was about the best Christmas Eve ever, the one I never had as a child. In the early morning everything was covered in white fresh snow.

BALLET DU SOLEIL in Atlanta

ART. We took all the children to Cirque du Soleil's Ovo, a poetic performance that reminded me of the performances of Lindsay Kemp, ages ago. Everything seemed to come together at the right pace, virtuosity never overdone. Nicolas now wants to become a trapecist,  like Karla.

4-D SHOP

ATLANTA. The Coca Cola "museum" and shop in Atlanta is really bizarre. The 4-D movie, a 3D movie plus moving seats, sprinkling water and "biting" mosquitoes, though, makes everyones jaw drop, at least if it is the first time you see such a thing.

FLAPJACKS

FOOD. I followed Sarah's "british" recipe - porridge oats, brown sugar and honey - but substituted butter for olive oil. Sarah, from Folding Fields, writes like an angel and cooks so too! All the children in the house, american and spaniards alike, loved them.

THE POLAR EXPRESS

BOOKS. Juan and Nicolas sat at the reading of The Polar Express with their cousins and the rest of the children at Barrow School in Athens,Georgia in their pajamas. We all had hot chocolate with mashmellows and a candycane. Every child was given a necklace with a bell. Nicolas didn't want to take it off for the whole day.

71.9 THE RIVER

POETRY

I couldn't breath in the night
and listened to The River
radio station, rock
in Atlanta and the passing trains
deep whistle in the distance.

On the way to NY and the romanticism of the Empire, the last poem from the London underground in The Chocolate Chip Waffle - and a cold - made me dare to write in the form of a poem after more than twenty years.
I believe that Atlanta's The River station might be available through the web, broadcasting the best of rock and pop of all times. Is anybody around listening to it?

THE EMPIRE on the movies

FILMS. I watched Sleepless in Seatle over the Atlantic, with its ending at the top of the Empire and the images of An affair to remember with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr in the same place. Magic moments from movies worth watching even if you were not on your way to the City.
I had with me The Great Gatsby to reread on the plane - one never reads Scott Fitzgerald too many times - but I had to abandon myself to this other NY.

EDITOR ON THE ROAD

NOTICE. We will be travelling around the United States from now to the 12th of January - 4 grown-ups with 4 children.  Most of the time I like to leave things to mature before writing about them - as you have probably noticed if you follow this blog - but I might write something on the spot too! You can use this entry as a post box for any comments or suggestions for this trip.

PARADISE LOST

ART. There is a Boticelli tondo, Madonna and Child, at the National Gallery. The first time I went there I couldn’t find it. It reminded me of a girl I met and lost once in Sussex. A curator told me they were restoring it.
In Milton’s “Paradise Lost” seraphim are poetic, so much they have lost too. The Lost Madonna, with its round shape is like a medal to wear close to the heart, and a good excuse to get lost a morning in London trying to find her – or in Sussex too. I’ve just found that The Virgin and Child with Saint John and an Angel” as it’s formally called, isn’t a Botticelli after all, as if it were to matter. The Museum itself has just hosted an exhibition of its own findings on its collection under the name of “Close Examination: Fakes, Mistakes and Discoveries”. You get it in the best families.

S'ESPALMADOR

ART. I usually wade to this small island after walking to the end of Ses Illetes in the island of Formentera. A friend and follower of this blog – Capi – sails there with his watercolour box. We were talking the other day and now he sends me this reminder of the summer and the island, in the middle of the winter.

E=MC2 by David Bodanis

BOOKS. The beauty and implications of the most famous equation in physics, written with beauty. By the end of the book a dedicated reader, if only by osmosis, might get an understanding of Einstein's theory of relativity and even feel quite at ease dining with Nobel prize winners!

SCHINDLER'S TANGO

FILMS. He did it when nobody did much. I cry everytime I watch the film.

Lo hizo cuando nadie hizo nada. Lloro cada vez que la veo.
