BLURB SEASON

PENCILANDBOXBOOKS. It was long due. We went on trips and celebrations to Florence in May, to Teuillac in June and to Bavaria in August and I hadn't produced any of the customary books yet. But I have managed to put all that work behind and now the presentation season starts.
I hope you like this first one here - Il Renascimento, Firenze 2015 - about how did we found Florence 500 years after! Click here to view.
PS: I know I have stuck with the Blurb books. I couldn't find any other publisher that I liked better. Anyone there with an alternative suggestion?

5 YEARS ON!

EDITORIAL. Wow, I never thought that it would be like this. That I would be celebrating just that - that I have managed to remain alive here in the void of the Universe. I know that only very few people read me, now and then, but I treasure it like the most precious jewel.
The day I started I didn't know what to expect. I wasn't expecting that anyway. It was more like just a will to fly. But now I know that - little as it may seem my little treasured jewel - it makes a lot of sense to me. And I am happy for that.
I wasn't expecting either that J would surf on a kayak nor that N would play the piano! I would  have expected it more the other way around! But so is life.  So, how about a little "home made" piano for the celebration?

STONER by John Williams

BOOKS. It has taken me 10 additional years to discover it. It took the world 50 years to knowledge this masterpiece to start with.  It is quite extraordinary, and thrilling, that these things should still happen.
B, a friend, recommended it to me assuredly - he had read it on his bookseller's advice - as a book that everybody had liked. He told me that it was simple, unpretentious and well written. A paragraph into that simplicity - and you are hooked forever. One might even think, now and then, that it is a true story, how couldn't it be?
Stoner should have left Columbia, Missouri. At least once. We all live somehow like automatons. So much out of inertia, habits, prejudice. It is understandable, up to a point. Who couldn't understand that? A wife, a family - sure one can find good reasons to continue, despite difficulties - but a job? God grace! One should be able to stand up, about a job at least. To try, at least once, to find another!
I taught once at a University too. If I could have thought that I could have learnt how to become a good teacher I might have stayed too.
And then, the book, like life itself, at some particular moments it even takes your breath away.

John Williams

¿Quién no podría entenderlo?

KAYAKING KANSAS

J and N. It all started nearly by chance, like most great things. J wasn't good with sports - apart from being a good swimmer. We used to walk to the pool at the other side of the bay many weekends in winter. Then, as I had some kayaking experience - having kayaked years ago - we tented the boys with kayaking, during some holidays in Mexico and the like. So joining the boys in for some kayaking summer activities in San Sebastian seemed only like the right follow up thing to do - imposing it on the boys for summer without forcing anything too hard. And then J thrilled with the waves, never in fear of them, and joined the club for winter.
The one in the picture was his first "trophy". Third out of probably four, if not less, but in real waters with real waves.
Then when dreaming about where he would like to go to High School (for a year) in the US, his wishes were: - Anywhere with waves! But, like most great things, unsuspected and unexpected, it happened to be Kansas. Well, he is already kayaking in Kansas, happy like fish in water.

MR O'SUNSHINE

SAN SEBASTIAN. O had never seen Little Miss Sunshine, the film, but worked for a models' agency. He introduced himself, and his agency, as the "representatives of Miss Universe" in the region. He talked non-stop on his cellphone about a necklace in his agency's "vault". A broken necklace, one could listen him to say, but one that imperiously needed to be sent to one of his beauties immediately, he would repeat. Breakfast at Tiffany's, the book, is what came to my mind. Capote too.
O hated all the doctors but all the nurses loved him, including "Lieutenant O'Neil". He showed me pictures of his models. One of them looked like a very young Ava Gardner! Youth was drawn all over O's mind. Parties, parties everyday, and a sense of drama too. I first met O on the same day that I met his family. O's mother, a smiling lady on her sixties, had widowed young - a heart attack took his husband, she told me herself - and then one day a car had rolled over her on a traffic light, green, she insisted. That was 10 years gone. She spent a year in hospital. She showed me her morphine patches, for the pain. She was still wearing them 10 years after. O's sister told me her own story too. She had been interned in a hospital 8 times over a period of 6 years, with an inflamed pancreas, until finally they took her spleen off, the cause of all from the beginning, she told me. They should have done it first time. Her life had suffered in the meanwhile, but she had a boy of 10 to live for. The boy, hey boy, he would play computer games non-stop laying on his uncle's bed.
They were more of them - of their happy big family - sitting on the windows and all, so many of them. They all loved Uncle O with a passion. Then - on the second of third day after I had first met them - on a brief talk apart, his mother told me that O was terribly ill.  Talking later with O, incidentally, he mentioned that his father, and his grandfather too, had died of a heart condition. He told me how his grandfather was the first man in town to get a pacemaker implanted, but had the batteries placed upside down, and when the doctor came in the morning to visit, he was already in the pine box. He told me too how his father felt sick on a Thursday and went all black and was gone by Sunday. O was a small boy then but how his father went black, that he remembered.
Many days there came friends to visit him too. They were all over the place.  Many of them he knew in relation to the agency. O was so happy then,  he couldn't stop thinking of his agency. A life ahead of beauties.
