TROPHY ISLAND 2

SAN SEBASTIAN. It was N's turn this year (he is still 9). The boat back from the island was taking too long to arrive so we swimmed back. Nephew T came too, the third head in the middle of the bay.

HEY JUDE

ENGLAND. I felt again the pain, watching the Olympics Opening Ceremony, of not being there with you. England, you were there at your best, again..

.
And any time you feel the pain, hey, Jude, refrain
Don't carry the world upon your shoulders
Well don't you know that its a fool who plays it cool
By making his world a little colder
.

SANTA RITA

MEMORIES. It was a joke that became a necessity. It all started trying to find a Saint Rita in London, when we lived there. Friend C was devoted to the Saint - whom supposedly intercedes in impossible causes -  and took me to St. Philip Neri's Catholic Church on Brompton Road. What was supposed to be a Saint Rita ended being the Virgin of the Seven Sorrows, to whom C had been adding an eighth I presume.
Throughout the years it had become an standard joke - between us - to enter a Church and ask for help to the available clergy  - and a sexton or two too - for the possible whereabouts of a Saint Rita in town.
The other day in San Sebastian the magic was there. We entered the Church of St. Vincent, went through the ritual, found but a Dolorosa, and were told about a St. Rita at a chapel on the harbor. Then, we managed to get a table in the most impossible place for a warm summer evening, on a new place with a terrace by the Santa Maria portico, had bread and cheese left there by the previous patrons, and finished dinner bringing a dessert from another nearby restaurant, for the girl waiting on our table.
The rest was magic too, those who were there knew, no need to tell more. St. Sebastian's statue was a witness from the top of Santa Maria watching over.

.

KRUGMAN'S LOBSTER

ECONOMICS.  A 125 euros/Kg lobster advertising and the restaurant was full. I don't know what would be Mr Krugman's answer to this one. wish I knewIs this the problem - a foodies bubble on its own right - or the solution - expenditure is always welcomed to help out of the crisis?
But somehow it didn't sound ethical to lunch that way. Might this be the problem instead?

FORMENTERA. The Bar El Pilar sits in the middle of La Mola's only street, on the road to the Lighthouse, the view of the sea above the cliff at the end of the fields. It holds the only billar (pool table) in town, and they open in the evenings - after the siesta - around 8.
.
Still a couple of hours to go, quietly, to spend waiting,
sitting at a table on its empty terrace, in the shade, writing.

A WHATSAPP PLAY

ART. A play for 2 actors (transcript from a WhatsApp chat).
.
A Roman road with a view
.
Scott: An American Professor himself, writing from Athens,Georgia.
Pet: Your humble - now more than ever - Spanish Editor of this periodical, writing from Formentera.
Setting: In the middle of a chat about the previous night sangria party, in Formentera of course.
.
- Scott: Btw, I heard that Spain is introducing new austerity measures, exactly the wrong thing to do, I think, but Germany is giving them no choice. I think it's only a matter of time before the Euro zone breaks up. Hopefully it won't happen until after Nov.
(Transcriber's note: "Certainly thinking of Obama").
- Pet: Krugman dixit. But you do not need even a single euro to enjoy this!
- Scott: Dixit?
- Pet: As in "magister dixit". A bit of latin would not do you any harm, it might be useful too down the Roman road to the beach - those were times of a single currency too - nothing lasts forever.
- Scott: Did the Romans vacation in Formentera too?

There is a faster (5 minutes) road by car but walking downhill the Roman road to the beach is a timeless experience.

CRISIS FERRY

FORMENTERA. For half the price of the Ibiza-Formentera ferry. It sails from Formentera to the middle of a beach in Ibiza, not far from the airport. The sail lasts like 2 hours - of Mediterranean sailing! And still people prefer the expensive fast half an hour one.
Angela must be right in something!

FORMENTERA'S LAW

FORMENTERA. We're packing for our July stay in Formentera. The sign - a picture from last year - means ALLOWED. Whatever-As-Long-As-It's-Available could be another meaning. Anybody's guess is welcomed.
One could always take the half an hour ferry to Ibiza and civilization, but we never do, and stick to the hardships of the little island!

ART. He scored two goals to beat Germany in the European Cup Semifinals but more than that he made a sculpture of himself as a celebration, like a new Michelangelo, like a Roman of this Era.
