IL SORPASSO (1962) with Vittorio Gassman

FILMS. The time of Ferragosto always brings this master film to my mind.
Driving on a hot summer Ferragosto weekend through Rome and Tuscany in Gassman's Lancia Aurelia convertible, one can witness how the economical "boom" of Italy in the early 60's was transforming a traditional society into an individualistic, consumerist and shallower one.
A lesson for any summer of any time.

  3. David, and alluring times too... one can fall with style :-)
Mermaid, golden indeed but the seeds for the downhill where already there, that's the beauty of the film. Sort of "Le déclin de l'empire américain" but starting already on the 60's!
It seems that we are declining all the time. :-)

  5. But they did make some very nice cars! I like to think we are constantly changing rather than declining.
