LOVE ACTUALLY (2003)

FILMS. An already 10 years old English romantic comedy which I hadn't seen before came as an expected, late, Christmas present. Back from the US I was feeling somehow nostalgic - may be the jet lag - even sad, about life passing by so quickly, the meaningless of all and so, and the movie made my smile for 2 hours and love everybody in the screen. And then, revisiting London - always works with me - and the lot of wonderful English actors that whatever they are given to do they make so delightfully, put dreaming back in the agenda. No mean feat.

No poco cosa.

A DEEP BREATH OF PUMPKIN BREAD

ATHENS, GEORGIA. Back into the South and its deep, rich, enjoy-life-as-it-comes Pumpkin Bread at my favorite Jittery Joe's. I wish I had the recipe (Nobody is perfect).

SAM MONTAIGNE

NORTH POTOMAC, MARYLAND. We had spent the previous week around Virginia and Washington DC - and a visit to Baltimore too for a hockey game - meeting people and partying here and there.
On January 1st, to start the new year, S and wife T took all of us in their house in Maryland for an elaborated long Chinese lunch. We then had oranges and tea - brought all the way from Qingdao where they were born - with a kind of warm and delicious corn bread straight from the oven.
Fireplaces came into the conversation - S and T having recently changed theirs. How inefficient the old style ones are but how so many people do not still replace them for the better "stove" type ones. XVI century French philosopher Montaigne had already noted in his "Essays" this difficulty of humans for changing habits, writing precisely about fireplaces at that time around different countries in Europe, and the stubbornness of the people in favor of the advantages of their local ones, against all evidence.
Throughout the conversation in the afternoon in their beautifully arranged cosy house, one could easily realize their high regard for Education, in the way that only Chinese people know how to do. The story of their life, their studies and their work, the way they educated their children, an example of it. It came clear - to me - that China will prevail while the rest of us lag behind in our knowledge about the things we do - preferring to play instead our little games of diversion, of hiding and pretending, of power and vanity. (Montaigne had already observed that too).
And so went the day. They cared about us and treated as like royalty, out of love for Cristina and how she helped them years ago. Thank you. We couldn't have a better start for the year.
