THE HISTORIES by Herodotus

BOOKS. I was reading Herodotus, always by my bedside, and this story about the Scythians brought me to life.  It makes one wonder if they weren't already the wiser, and we the worser in disguise. There was some sense of justice there. Certain rules. I wish I had been given those last days the opportunity given to a Scythian.

FROM BOOK FOUR:
"... When the king of Scythia falls sick, he sends for three of the most reputable soothsayers who proceed to practice their arts in the way I have described; more often than not they declare that such and such a person has sworn falsely by the kings hearth. The supposed culprit is at once arrested and brought into the king's presence, where he is charged by the soothsayers who tell him that their powers of divination have revealed that he has sworn by the king's hearth and perjured himself, and that his perjury is the cause of the king's sickness. The man, of course, denies the charge, and makes a great fuss, whereupon the king sends for more soothsayers - six this time instead of three - who also bring their skills to bear. Should they convict the accused of perjury, he is beheaded without more ado, and his property is divided by lot amongst the first three soothsayers, if, however, the new six acquit him, more are brought in, and, if need be, still more again, and if, in the final result, the majority declare for the man's innocence, the law is that the three original ones should be executed. The method of execution is this: a cart is filled with sticks and harnessed to oxen; the guilty men, gagged and bound hand and foot, are thrust down amongst the sticks, which are then set alight, and the oxen scared off at a run. Often the oxen are burnt to death together with the soothsayers; often too, the pole of the cart is burnt through soon enough to allow them to escape with a scorching. Peccant soothsayers  - "lying prophets" as they are called - are burned to death in this way for other crimes besides the one I have described. When the king orders an execution, he does not allow the soothsayers's sons to survive him: all males are put to death, but not the females, who are in no way harmed. ..."

ABOUT CAMELOT AND DREAMED KINGDOMS, in Memoriam

IN MEMORIAM. I took this picture in Rome the day Jose Luis died. I had been the last one to arrive at Sherwood (the name I gave to our working place) and he was the perfect coach. He was due to retire by the end of this year, but not this way. And still we managed to find the time to do a lot.
He was a self made man with a natural flair for people. With a natural brightness, direct from God too. I'm more of a scholar with a multinational company type of career. But we fitted like hand and glove. He had already spent 30 years in the company, mainly on the ranks, but by the art of time and chance we were left in charge, on our own, in a crucial time of change in the world around - and step by step started to build a new future of ideas and products for it. The way into it wasn't that different of what he had done 20 years before. As he used to say it was "back to the origins". Taking better care of customers, being closer to them and their needs, every day, friendlier. This time with the help of the "advanced technologies" that I was bringing in.
It was exciting, it was beautiful. People who had been 25 years stack in the galleys, starting to thrive with the prospect of a brighter future. We needed illusion and we found it in a team of people committed with the new dreams (without dreams there is nothing). He enjoyed it to the very last day.
With his dead, while we were all still inside the sadness, became all the dark forces of the past. They must have been waiting in despair, unable to stand so many changes. They blamed on me everything possible, even the risk of turmoil!
This was the way Sherwood died, as Camelot died before.
The gods, compassionate, saved you from seeing it happen.
