RUSSIAN BALLET IN DIXIELAND

ATHENS, GEORGIA. The State Ballet Theatre of Russia gave a good performance of Tchaikovsky's classic Christmas Nutcracker. In taste.  All the way into the American mainland its colorfulness felt somehow very natural to the exuberance of America itself. The Athenian crowd, pleased with the Russian dancing, and with themselves - mostly Sunday dressed for the occasion -  broke in applause now and then too, even where you shouldn't.
But the boys didn't like it, and neither did their American cousins. I felt the emotion of other Christmas and other Nutcrackers all coming together, in particular the ones at the Royal Festival Hall, while living in London, and enjoyed the little dances on the stage more than ever. Are we getting that old?

CHICKEN CHRISTMAS

ATHENS, GEORGIA. We are in Peach Country, but the boys are hooked - again- to the chicken of Chick-fil-A. (We, the grown ups have already have a couple of two of bottles of Cab with "American Asiago" cheese!)

MARTINIQUE. I've been in Martinique several times. But the time I went with M, A and B to the Jardin de Balata will remain in my memory for ever. We had arrived at Sainte-Anne sailing from the island of St Vincent, just in front, and anchored in its bay for a couple of days. One of them we rented a car. We wanted to go as deep into the mountains and the forest as possible, as a sort of irresistible need. As we went, the road became narrower every curve, and the vegetation denser, and the air as humid as if it were full of rain. We were soon tired and I even nearly fainted. We found a hut-bar in the jungle serving a rum drink to reestablish the blood pressure in our bodies, but still it took us a good while of the same serpentine like unending road until we saw the sea again.
We had crossed to the other side of the island - Martinique isn't that big - and there on the slopes above the brilliant blue ocean was the garden of Balata, full of every color. It was such a relief, such a happy dream coming alive after a "hard day".
This happened at a time of ups in our life, when everything seemed to be going from good to better. Soon we were to find otherwise - nothing remains as it is forever.
But we didn't know then, and everything seemed possible, and worth trying, every desire well deserved, every dream so real.
The poster A bought that day is pinned to a wall at his place, 12 years after.

He estado en Martinica varias veces.

GUINNESS HONEY

HEALTH. I'd got this jar of dark Guinness-like honey from A, friend and sailor, as a sort of Christmas present. We were having lunch together and honey came into the conversation. We had already drunk our bottle of wine - and a little more from the one left unfinished on another table too - when we went through the honeys we had found all over the world and the years. I remembered honeys brought from New Zealand, from Romania, from Chile. We remembered a very special one that we'd found together - being sold by a mountain road in one of the Canary Islands. And after such a pilgrimage the best one was to be found just inland in Northern Spain - in the district of Palencia - a jewel of a honey that I've got delivered at home, a case every year, through another honey-mad friend. A, for his part, disputed this and defended another contending honey. So he took me to visit (another) friend, one with a bar and honey for friends and costumers delivered from Zamora - another inland spot in Northern Spain - and bought a pot for me. The one in the picture it is. I promised A a Palencia one in return.  We agreed to settle the argument with the help of another bottle of wine, in vino veritason the New Year - I am leaving for the States next week with M. and the boys.
Incidentally, I must add that I do not find the United States to be really a Honey Country. I could never found a really good one there. But I am happy to let my American followers dispute that too in these pages. In fact I more than welcome it!
