IRIS MURDOCH'S BROTHERHOOD

BOOKS.
I read in her book "The book and the brotherhood":
 - Whereas I - ?
 - You were always dissolving yourself into righteous discontent, thrilled in your bowels by the idea of some high thing elsewhere. So it has gone on. You see yourself as a lonely climber, of course higher up than the other ones, you think you might leap out of yourself onto the summit, yet you know you can not, and being pleased with yourself both ways you go nowhere. This "thinking" that your are going to do, what will it be? Writing your memories?
.
Anybody else for the brotherhood?

.
¿Alguien más para la hermandad?

LAWRENCE OF ARABIA (1962)

PHOTOGRAPHY. At the end of the movie someone says something about how old men learn to mistrust and to be cautious. I wish sometimes I had. This might be a lesson of the movie but what Lawrence of Arabia is always a lesson, is of photography. 50 years have passed, and already all about landscape photography was there.

THE FAMILY THAT DISSAPEARED

ART. I've  been subscribed to The New Yorker for 15 years. As a homage to the wonderful magazine, here is the cover of the New Yorker of November 15 1999. There was an article on that issue - THE FAMILY THAT DISSAPEARED -  a personal history by Noga Tarnopolsky,  that made me cry.
It is an homage too to the terrible suffering brought upon so many Argentinians by the "Military Junta" that ruled Argentina from 1976 to 1983.

He estado suscrito al  New Yorker durante 15 años.

FILMS. Since I'm learning some German I went to see this German movie in German (well, with subtitles).
The depicted rise and fall of Germany could be seen too like a metaphor of the rise and fall of anything - or anyone - which rises too high and then collapses. Love can survive all that, and then, love can get shattered too.

THE IRON GIANT (1999)

FILMS. The Iron Giant (1999) is an animated movie based on the 1968 story The Iron Man written by the English poet Ted Hughes. It tells the story of a lonely boy raised by his widowed mother, discovering a giant iron man who fell from space. All that during the years of the Cold War.
I chose it to watch it with the children and I ended up enjoying it as much as they did. I don’t know how I had missed it before, nor do I understand how it isn't better known. The story is beautiful and well told. For adults and children alike.

4 TORRES

POETRY

I saw them built, from the window of my office
I could see them grow, from my prison in the sky
I had a driver a waiter and you name it what,
a wine cellar too,
though still it was a prison.

Each time I see them now, from the air, landing
in Madrid, I remember the building up, the wonder,
nose against  the window, the cranes to heaven,
the sunset shadows,
though still it was a prison.

THE AGE OF INNOCENCE

BOOKS. Like in Edith Wharton's novel, The Age of Innocence, we do all live in our own Age of Innocence, somehow unaware of the insurmountable pressures of our own societies.
If one loses his position, job, money, friends, the worst to get over is the shame, the losing of face, the regret.
The 1880’s New York of the book is colorfully depicted in the 1993 Martin Scorsese’s movie too, with its suffocating atmosphere, but which society doesn't suffocate its own people?

ART.  The photographic study of Barbara Schroeder at the time of her exhibition at the Citadelle de Blaye is divided in 4 parts: 1. Le déjeuner. 2. La route. 3. La Messe à Blaye. 4. Le prière.
As I said (PencilandBoxBooks) it was my first book made on order!
PS. Hervé put a case of his wine, Chateau Grand Maison, in the car boot, but he does it every time, photos o no photos :-)

THE CATCHER IN THE RYE (rye from rye whiskey)

BOOKS. I got hooked into Salinger since I first read him. I've given The Catcher in the Rye away, the book, to make others read it, like a dozen times, obsessively nearly, to buy it back again, couldn't just not have it near. God, I always wanted to write like that, damn book, like chasing a ghost. Then, like two years ago, I read Until They Bring The Streetcars Back and it was somehow the same teenagers story but easier to write, not much though, and I guessed then that you had to be a teenager or something to write like that too. But now, right now, I'm reading a book called "Fear and loathing: on the campaign trail '72" written by a Hunter S.Thompson, didn't know how it came into my hands, bought it in a Border's sale, nearly on price only, around last Christmas I think, never heard about it before, and damn it a zillion times, all the magic of the rye is there. It is about the campaign trail of 1972, just politics and speeches and ballot counting and all that, as the title says, and it works like hell. I'm fascinated, this man writes the same rye, whiskey rye and who knows what else making half of the job, but still has to make the other half. And no need of teenagers around. It is like growing up!
Yes, I know what are you thinking by now, I ain't no Salinger. But he is. The closest grown-up whiskey version of it that I have ever found.
It comes to my mind now that there must be more. If he's done it, there have to be more like him out there. I'm a stupid illiterate. Nothing can help it ever nomore. But reading more like that would be prize enough for my perseverance.
Y no hacen falta adolescentes.
No soy ningún Salinger.

IN MEMORY

MEMORIES. I remember I sat with my mother in one of the benches of Richmond Hill, once when she came with a friend to visit me in London, in contemplation of the view.
