THE WITCHES OF ZUGARRAMURDI

SAN SEBASTIAN. Zugarramurdi is a small town in the Basque mountains just by the French border, an hour from San Sebastian. The place couldn't be more idyllic.
In 1610 though, the Inquisition accused of witchcraft  53 neighbors. Most of them then died either in their way to prison, there, or burned alive at the stake. So much for choice in Ecclesiastical Justice.
The children, unaware, played at the akelarre's site in the underground cave.

  2. It seems that sometimes the most idyllic and innocent places can have a dark past.

  3. Yes, they were afraid of women and the feminine mystique so under the guidance of the church they accused them of being witches. This sadly spilled over into the new world. As David said, many of the most beautiful places have a dark past. And your pictures are beautiful.

  8. Great historical post which caused me to do a little more reading... The top photo is stunning and not the scene one would associate with auto-da-fé. The cave is fabulous.
